Dev takes deep roots along Sino-India border

Correspondent

MUCHUT, Nov 19: Development is taking deep roots on this side of the Sino-India border unlike the common impression that other side of the border was highly developed.

This was the message conveyed by Lumla lawmaker and Civil Aviation Parliamentary Secretary Jambey Tashi while inaugurating the community mushroom farms here in Tawang district along the tri-junction of Bhutan, Tibet and India here today.

The farms are set up by New Delhi-based Inspire Network for Environment (INE) and Yuva Arunachal, both voluntary organizations engaged in improving the lot of the people living in the border areas.

Addressing a public meeting, Tashi advocated chairveti as the principle of his life and lauded INE and Yuva Arunachal and ICICI bank and its Foundation for their path-breaking initiative in six border villages by launching community mushroom cultivation farming to provide solace to the villagers looking for sustainable development alternative with cultivation becoming less remunerative with the passage of time.

Appreciating former chief minister, late Dorjee Khandu, who desired greater welfare of the state and present Chief Minister Nabam Tuki for giving priority to agri-horticulture sector for improving the lot of the people of the agrarian state, Tashi assured all possible support to INE and Yuva Arunachal in making their all endeavours successful.

Mushroom, traditionally consumed by the local denizens since centuries, could be the best unique sales proposition (USP) if branded and promoted as Tawang mushroom to carve a niche in regional, national and global market, he reasoned.

Tashi placed on record special thanks for Yuva Arunachal president Chombay Kee, INE programme officers Monalisa Sen and Dr K M Jayahari for their painstaking efforts to ensure the success of many other projects, including Tawang Rhododendron squash production, community Rhododendron nursery to plant 3,000 saplings to protect the famous Tawang Monastery from landslide and convincing the religious Monpas to convert their idle sacred grooves to productive land by planting Rhododendron saplings.

Saluting the uniformed and un-uniformed sentinels of Indian frontier, senior journalist Pradeep Kumar called upon the guests from Mumbai to go back with the smiles of the local Monpas community, who live a hard life with limited expectations but continue to smile all the time without being influenced by the materialism, the bane of the present world.

Kumar unfolded Gandhiji’s locket given to Jawaharlal Nehru that advised look at the face of the last person in case of any development dilemma.

The INE, Yuva Arunachal, ICICI Bank and Foundation have been following the same principle to improve the lot of the border villagers to supplement the efforts of the GoI and GoAP, he said and appealed to the villagers to not lose their smile under the impact of modern developmental urges.

ICICI Foundation president Subrata Mukharjee, chief manager Jaising Dhumal and senior manager Joachim Colaco assured all possible support to ensure the success of the project and promotion of a Tawang brand of mushroom.

Mukharjee said the environment-friendly project is best suited for the high altitude region where the locals face a harsh winter when no cultivation is remunerative.

Expressing his happiness over the success of the project, INE president Dr Kinsuk Mitra informed that the residents of six villagers and some private entrepreneurs have been trained in mushroom cultivation, provided with mushroom spawns as was proved during the inaugural function with over hundreds of buds visible in every bunches.

He wished that every month the villagers should earn Rs 20,000 and the products reach the North East market as Tawang mushroom very soon. He assured to set up a community mushroom processing centre for the purpose.

Commanding officer of 16 Rajputana Rifles Col Vijay R Jagtap, in his address, assured all possible cooperation and assistance for the development of the border villagers but advocated that their ever smiling faces as referred by the journalist should not be lost under the impact of materialism.

“I have visited many parts of the country but have never come across smiling people despite the fact that they lead a very harsh life. Their smiling faces encourage us to work for protecting the frontier of this great nation. I salute them from the core of my heart.”

The villagers gave a rousing welcome to the visiting guests with a heart touching cultural programme besides serving local delicacies.

The INE gave away wages to the community for constructing the mushroom huts and felicitated those who have been constantly supporting the project.

Thackeray deserves appreciation for his life-long mission

Dear Editor,

Balasaheb Thac-keray's modus operandi might have been wrong, the critics might be justified in condemning Thackeray's various acts of encouraging violence against certain religious or linguistic groups; but his life-long mission of protecting and promoting the honour, dignity, rights, language and culture of the indigenous Marathis on the soil of Maharashtra deserves heartiest congratulation. "India for Indians" is fine; but the indigenous ones cannot be turned into aliens in their own land while displaying "highest" form of nationalism. Thanks to Balasaheb's "parochial" brand of politics; Marathi language reigns supreme in all spheres of Maharashtra and Mumbai, the indigenous ones are well-assured of jobs in all the Central Government establishments and industries of the state, taxi-permits or land can never be availed/purchased by an outsider overnight and no migrant can dare to insult or threat a Marathi manoos in the state.

What a contrast to the "liberal" West Bengal where Bengali language and culture is gasping for breath and the North Indian migrants have not only displaced the indigenous Bengalis from almost all urban areas of the state and are  snatching the jobs and land by hook or by crook; they can also dare to physically beat up or molest the Bengalis without a bit of  hesitation! It is better to be a "parochial" and lead an honourable life, rather than a "liberal" being consigned to non-entity in his own land.

Balasaheb's legacy will certainly be carried on boldly by his followers who have been rightly groomed by the late Thackeray to remain true to their roots and heritage.

A stitch in time saves nine

Dear Editor,

Heartbeats of all the conscious denizens are racing at an abnormal phase anxiously awaiting as to what kind of leaders are we going to witness this time after AAPSU election ! The highest enterprise of the new day is to choose a leader with benign charisma and an undying sacrificial attitude towards the society to cleanse, to reconsider, to restore, to correct the evil without impairing the good.

The sole motto of the AAPSU as a student body was to attend the crisis of the student group but in Arunachal Pradesh with no opposition party, the AAPSU body stretched its wings to cross-check the functioning of our Govt. If the AAPSU  leaders stuck to their ideals today, Arunachal would have been in a better position. Nevertheless, with the beginning of new phase, let’s seize this opportunity to choose a leader with leadership quality and the only valid test of leadership is the ability to lead and lead vigorously till the last breath.

The need of the hour is to open up our minds and souls and look around the piles of miseries we are loaded with on our tender shoulders gifted by our predecessors.  While economic liberalization is being witnessed  in India since 1991, Arunachal, despite its  bountiful natural resources like coal, hydro power and flora and fauna etc, took a back seat. Here we should keep in mind that technically a state or a nation cannot be adjudged as developed or underdeveloped by its resources only. If that were so, today Russia would have been the richest country in the world with its resources like oil, gas, diamonds, gold, silver etc. For the development to happen the Govt needs to have strategic plans and policies to carry forward its aims and objectives. Look at Japan, Switzerland, Taiwan and Singapore; without having any vital resources, they have achieved their goals.

Here appears the task of the AAPSU  to clasp our state from deterioration and be a candlelight. The foremost priority is not for constitutional or political rights but for economic freedom. The great nations like England and America started with industrial revolution but in our country, particularly in our state, it started the other way and at a very later phase, with political revolution, with demands for rights, rather than with the concept of improved work culture with responsibility.  Real development could be achieved when both the followers and the leaders go hand in hand, especially the youths, with proper channelizing of the youth power guided by the beacon lights (AAPSU).

Here one should remember that discipline is the key word for the youths today, without which nothing in life can be achieved and to change the society one needs to analyze oneself first before pointing fingers at others. Change should come from within, not forcefully. Unless we change our mentality we can develop nothing.

An appeal for Mathematics teacher

Dear Editor,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to request the director of secondary education to post Mathematics teacher to Liromoba Higher Secondary School at the earliest.

The Govt Higher Secondary School, which was established in 2009, is running without Mathematic subject teacher in spite of our repeated representations for the same. As a result, most of the students left the school and there is little progress in academic activities.

Traffic accidents kill 1.3 million every year

India witnessed one road accident every minute in 2011 which claimed one life every 3.7 minutes, one of the highest in the world.

According to the latest Road Transport ministry report, a total of 4.97 lakh road accident was reported in 2011. Though compared to 2010, the accidents have gone down by 1,945, the number of deaths at 1,42,485 has increased by over 7,000.

Driver’s fault accounted for a whopping 77.5% of the total road accidents while pedestrian and cyclist’s fault accounted for a mere 3.7% and defect in road condition just 1.5%.

Among the states, Maharashtra topped the list with the highest number of road accidents at 68,438 followed by Tamil Nadu (65,873), Madhya Pradesh (49,406), Karnataka (44,731) and Andhra Pradesh (44,165).

Between 2001 and 2011, while road accidents has increased by 2.1% , the number of fatalities has increased by 5.5 %. In comparison, during this period, the number of registered vehicles increased by 9.9%.

This year, the world's roads have claimed some 1.2 million lives, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Around 90 per cent of road traffic deaths and injuries occur in low and middle-income countries, and most of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. According to the UN World Health Organization (WHO), in addition to killing close to 1.3 million people every year, traffic accidents also injure or disable as many as 50 million more – and, without urgent action, road traffic injuries will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030.

The UN chief  calls for effective measures to minimizing road traffic deaths and injuries as part of our quest for an equitable and sustainable future.
